About The Spirit of GAMBO

Exuberant playing fun, drive and musical craftsmanship are the strength of viola da gamba consort The Spirit of GAMBO. The repertoire includes music from the seventeenth and eighteenth century by Dowland, Purcell and Bach, among others.

Freek Borstlap, Gesina Liedmeier, Ivanka Neeleman and Thomas Baeté form the basis of the ensemble. They play on viola's da gamba that Liedmeier built especially for the ensemble. The painted instruments and the sculpted animal heads are a feast for the eyes and ears.

The Spirit of GAMBO received the French classical music award Diapason d'Or for the CDs John Jenkins, Consort Music of Four Parts (2011) and Christopher Tye, Consort Music - In Nomine (2018).

In 2021 Dutch viol ensemble Spirit of Gambo gave the first concert promoted by West Cork Music after the Covid lockdown. Exactly two years later, on Sunday 22nd October 2023 they return to Bantry with the first concert in their three-venue Irish tour.

Their programme celebrates the 400th anniversary of the death of William Byrd, and the legacy of Archbishop Narcissus Marsh’s unique manuscript collection of music for the viola da gamba still held in Marsh’s Library, Dublin.

The remarkable flowering of English music for consorts of up to six viols began with the English high renaissance of the Tudors and continued through the Stuart Restoration of the seventeenth century. King Charles 1st was an avid performer and the programme also includes music by his teacher William Lawes and by other great exponents of the form including Henry Purcell, John Jenkins, Matthew Locke and Orlando Gibbons.

Vuurwerk in het schemerduister: de zwanenzang van de gamba

Het was een knaller van een einde voor de viola da gamba, die in de barok plaats moest ruimen voor de vioolfamilie. Voor een laatste opflakkering tekenden componisten aan beide zijden van de Noordzee: in Engeland - waar Lawes, Locke en Purcell de consortmuziekdeden pieken - en op het vasteland, met iconen als Charpentier en Legrenzi. The Spirit of Gambo combineert de rijpste vruchten van het gambarepertoire met transcripties van Bach en Cabanilles.
