The Spirit of Gambo – consort of viols – “sharing our passion for music”

The power of The Spirit of Gambo, according to the critics, is the sheer pleasure we take in playing together, our drive and our excellent musicianship.
Our repertoire includes music by Dowland, Purcell, Bach and many others. What enables us to move audiences is the combination of the emotional charge
inherent in the music and the intimacy between us during our performances. The Spirit of Gambo has set the new standard in consort music performance.

The ensemble was founded by Freek Borstlap and Gesina Liedmeier. Ivanka Neeleman and Thomas Baeté are the other two players making up the core ensemble.
The Spirit of Gambo plays on beautiful instruments built especially for the ensemble by Gesina Liedmeier. The painted decorations and carved animal heads
on the instruments make them a delight for the eye as well as the ear.

Their CD ‘Jenkins consort music of four parts’ received the highest distinction: a Diapason d’ Or award. The group plays frequently at international
festivals and they have recorded several CDs, including ‘The Silver Swan’ with soprano Claron McFadden and a CD of instrumental music by Christopher Tye.

The players!

Freek Borstlap

Freek is the artistic leader of The Spirit of Gambo. Besides his international career as a soloist, a baritone player and teacher, his work is also focused on the performance of ensemble music for viola da gamba. He did a lot of consort music recordings with The Spirit of Gambo and also with the French and German baroque chamber music. In recent years he did several awarded CD’s with The Spirit of Gambo with music from John Jenkins, Orlando Gibbons and Christopher Tye.

Thomas Baeté

Thomas plays as a gambist and violinist along with the ensembles Capilla Flamenca, Mala Punica, Graindelavoix and La Caccia. He is an ensemble member of La Roza Enflorese (sephardic music) and La Folata (medieval repertoire). With these groups he recorded a dozen of CD’S and can be heard in and outside Europe. Thomas also gives gamba and ensemble lessons at the Stedelijk Conservatorium in Leuven and the Academie de Musique of Sint-Lambrechts-Woluwe.

Ivanka Neeleman

Among other things Ivanka studied viola da gamba at Wieland Kuijken. She is a regular guest at various orchestras and ensembles for old music like the Vlaamse Capilla Flamenca, Zefiro Toma, Brisk and the Combattimento Consort. Besides that, she also teaches gamba lessons at the musical school in Leiden and is a teacher at a school located in The Hague.

Gesina Liedmeier

Gesina (Geesje) Liedmeier studied viola da gamba with Marianne Müller and Wieland Kuijken. She played in various ensembles and productions, like with Collegium Vocale Gent, and she is one of the founders of The Spirit of Gambo. Besides being a musician, she is a successful builder of historic instruments. The spirit of Gambo usually plays on viola’s da gamba which were built by her.
