Gesina Liedmeier

Gesina (Geesje) Liedmeier studied viola da gamba in Lyon with Marianne Müller, and in The Hague with Wieland Kuijken. She has played in many ensembles, including the Collegium Vocale Gent, and has made many radio performances and CD recordings. She is a co-founder of The Spirit of Gambo.

In addition to being a musician, Geesje is a successful maker of historical instruments. The Spirit of Gambo usually plays on gambas she has made. She has done research on string instruments in various European music collections, and does conservation, restoration, and catalogue work for the Gemeentemuseum in The Hague. Her knowledge of historical instruments has had an important influence on the ensemble sound of The Spirit of Gambo.

Build and play, make beautiful things, that is my way of expressing myself. What, amongst other things, makes The Spirit special are the instruments and their strings. We experiment a lot. For a consort that plays Renaissance and early Baroque music, totally different instruments are needed than are needed, for instance, for a duo that plays St. Colombe. To make music is an abstract, but therefore also profound, way of communicating both the expression of pure reason and pure emotion.”

Geesje also knows how to successfully combine building and playing by playing the musical saw.
