An exciting journey into a world of forgotten sounds
The internationally recognized The Spirit of Gambo brings a world of forgotten sounds into life again. The exquisite tonal quality, the balance between instruments, and the richness of musical content captivate any listener, giving them the feeling of being directly transported back in time and leaving them deeply rewarded.
What, among other things, makes The Spirit of Gambo special is the set of instruments and their strings. The instruments of The Spirit of Gambo are made by one of our own members: Gesina Liedmeier. The core of The Spirit of Gambo is composed of Freek Borstlap, Ivanka Neeleman, Thomas Baeté and Geesje Liedmeier. Each of the musicians is able to emphasize his or her instrument’s individuality with a blend of intimacy, intricacy, and passion in perfect combination with the others.
The ensemble has recorded a number of CDs, which have received international praise and recognition. The recording of John Jenkins' "Consort Music of Four Parts" (2011) was awarded a Diapason d'Or, which is an award for outstanding classical music recordings given by reviewers of Diapason magazine in France: ‘Listening to this CD one feels the happiness shared by the consort musicians and experiences a pleasure that is close to a concert experience.”
Over time, The Spirit of Gambo has developed a unique and varied instrumental repertoire that draws out the richness and diversity of the viol. Excellent singers like Claron McFadden and Emma Kirkby feel like ‘fish in water’ with The Spirit of Gambo. The ensemble regularly collaborates with other well known ensembles, such as Brisk, Capilla Flamenca, and Camerata Trajectina.
