What, among other things, makes The Spirit of Gambo special is the set of instruments and their strings. The instruments of The Spirit of Gambo are made by one of our own members: Gesina Liedmeier. A consort that plays Renaissance music requires totally different tools than a duo playing St. Colombe. Together, we experiment a lot.
Our viole da gamba are larger than usual. They are completely stringed with gut ─ so, no metal-wrapped bass strings. That makes the sound different ─ moving, dynamic, transparent, and human. The instruments do not make a cloud of sound, but a sweet, healthy tone, which beautifully carries and mixes. A consort with such gambas throbs. The descants are mild, and thrive on the combined sounds of all of the voices.
