The Months

For a long time three friends, Matthew Locke, John Jenkins, and Christopher Simpson, were the main influences on the musical language of 17th. century England. The works of these three composers form the basis of the repertoire of The Spirit of GAMBO.

Initially, Christopher Simpson was the best known of the three. Although nowadays he is regarded mainly as a theoretician, during his lifetime he was very popular as a composer and gamba virtuoso. One of his chief works is The Months, a series of twelve compositions. His friend and colleague John Jenkins was so impressed by the work that he wrote an ode in praise of it:

And those thy well composed Months o'the Yeere;

Which Month thy pregnant Muse hath richlyly Drest,

and to each Month hath made a Musick-feast.
