August Kühnel

Sonate ô Partite ad una ô due Viola da Gamba

The music of August Kühnel (1645 - 1700) is warm en invigorating; colourfoul consonances and delightful melodies alternate with celebratory musical passages. August Kühnel was one of the greatest German viol players of the generation befor J.S. Bach.

He composed his own music, which was customary in those days. Inspired by the music of his time, he created masterful variations on existing themes, a skill he presumably learned in England. Some of his compositions show definite traces of Italian arias that were performed in the opera of Dresden, also known as 'Florence on the Elbe'.

Kühnel's synthesis between Italian, French and English styles is typical of the German instrumental compositions techniques of the late seventeenth. In that sense, we can consider Kühnel's work to be a forerunner of the masterly instrumental compositions of J.S. Bach.
